Voltana (Vultâna in Romagna) is a hamlet of about 3.000 inhabitants of the town of Lugo, in the province of Ravenna. It is part of the constituency of Voltana, Chiesanuova and Ciribella. The patrons are the Saints Antonio of Padua and Giovanni Bosco. A partial part of the Via Fiumazzo that crosses Voltana was occupied, before the reclamations occurred in these places, from the bed of the Santerno river, and just where now rises Voltana the river had a winding path, with numerous turns, reason why that place was called Le Svoltane, the name that later turned into Villa Voltana until it arrived to the present day with the name of Voltana. In 1604 the waters of the Santerno river were deviated westward to flow into the San Bernardino valley. The first houses of Voltana were built on the abandoned river course. The land reclamation continued throughout the 17th century. Subsequently, it was possible to start a flourishing agriculture in the area. A second settlement took place between 1713 and 1717. In the eighteenth century built the "via della Bonificazione" from Ferrara to Ravenna (now "via Reale", part of the highway 16 Adriatica), which allowed the passage of the rivers by means of a passageway. The road has allowed the country easy and safe connections with nearby cities. Since 1885, with the construction of the railway line between Ravenna and Ferrara, the urban settlement was concentrated in the current site of Voltana. A character who marked Voltana's story is Luigi Antonellini (1861-1933) who, on June 23, 1907, with 30 other workers, founded and subsequently directed the Cooperative Society among the working workers of Villa Voltana, with the aim of "taking public and private works". Afterwards, the Cooperative acquired the mainland of the Valle Maggiore. With the advent of fascism Antonellini was forced to flee from Voltana and the cooperative movement was dissolved. Voltana's population actively participated in the Italian Resistance and among the most significant episodes is the sacrifice of Angelo Filippi and his sons Gustavo and Oriano in 1944. Monuments in Voltana: Villa Cacciaguerra Ortolani, located at the bottom of the Piazza dell'Unità and recently renovated, houses the headquarters of the municipal delegation of Voltana. It is presumed to have been built in the beginning of the nineteenth century on the ruins of the old mansion; Casa del Popolo, in the corner between railway and via Fiumazzo, still today one of the bars of Voltana; Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Arginine, located in via Comunetta and open only a few days. 0532 800
